Daily Drop
It only takes one.
It only takes one move, one call, one deal, one meeting, to change your life. If you’ve been going hard with no results yet, don’t give up, there’s a breakthrough waiting on the other side of this.
When we persevere and stay on our purpose day after day, we ensure some form of success. Not necessarily through sheer talent or inherent natural born skill, although those help tremendously. The act of showing up each day is the key.
A musician can be making music 10 years with little to no fans or audience, but it only takes one good new song to get people interested. That one song won’t necessarily make them a career but it gives them an opportunity to grow a fan base and have people want to hear more. It gets their foot in the door of success.
An author may have written a few books that were not very well known, but it only takes one book that people find valuable to change the trajectory of the authors career. One book can change everything for them and often does.
Sometimes it’s meeting one person, say a mentor or coach that see’s something in you. They believe in you, one person can help to foster your growth, they look deeper than the surface, they’re aware of the areas that need improvement. Even if we have been unable to recognize it, a fresh perspective can illuminate things that we may have missed.
So whatever you’re doing, it only takes one moment for it to change for the better. Could be one post or one piece of content that goes viral. One phone call could tell you someone’s interested in buying your company.
In order to really harness the power of the one thing, we should really narrow our focus to one thing. We wake up with one purpose in mind. We work on our one thing every single day, constantly learning, adapting and improving.
Obviously we all have more than one thing to do each day, but the point is a narrow focus on one project or craft, being fully present in the work for extended periods of time. When our attention is split into trying to juggle too many things at once, our energy is less concentrated and therefore less effective.
Think of focus like sun rays through a magnifying glass. The more dialled in we are the more concentrated our energy is on a single point. The more focused, controlled and directed the energy, the more effective it is.
Now an important caveat is this power of one goes both ways. It's a double edged sword like so many things are. It only takes one horrible decision for a negative outcome. It only takes one moment of weakness to make someone slip up. It takes one moment of exhaustion or burnout to make a serious mistake.
Does this mean we live in fear of failure? Of course not, We simply recognize that we are not invincible, we choose humility over prideful arrogance, we’re wary of flying too close to the sun to so to speak.
We don’t allow our egos and lower desires to drive our actions, rather we make our decisions based on logic and calm reflection. We think before we speak or act. Knowing one bad decision can wipe away years of progress or worse.
So let’s have hope, we understand the importance of humility. We don’t bite off more than we can chew at once. We realize certain actions can create the opposite of the desired effect. We work each day passionately, intentionally and intensely on our mission. We trust the process and don’t allow discouragement or doubt.
Whatever we’re working on, our attention is focus solely on the one thing we’re presently doing. We don’t let our mind wander and our attention drift while we work, because we understand the power of single pointed focus. Focus can be fine tuned like a laser onto a single point, taking aim at our goals.
The one thing also changes and develops as we do. Obviously once we master something there will come a point where the old goal is complete and it’s time to recalibrate our sights onto the next point. But the key is to keep it one main thing at a time with as little leakage in focus and attention as possible.
So, find what excites you, this is what i’m doing too. We need to be passionate about some goal, some journey of becoming, some quest to fulfill. We need some excitement about what we’re doing. Something that gets us out of bed in the morning looking forward to the new day. Do you know your one thing yet?
