Working on our expectations.
What gets more time in your mind, the worst case scenario or the best case scenario? The answer to that question points us to our beliefs and expectations from life.
If you had to describe one of those above scenes in detail which could you do faster? Which has more detail and was ready to go, available in your mind? Im going to guess the negative one.
We often prepare for the worst, which i’m not advocating against, I support being prepared, but the issue is the negative expectation. Most of us carry a subconscious feeling that can cause trouble unknowingly.
It’s the feeling of lack, of unworthiness. This state of being is low energy and draining. It can create a self fulfilling prophecy. The person fears rejection or failure, they don’t perform well. They figure they knew they didn’t have what it took and the cycle perpetuates.
Someone living this way will feel like they’re walking on eggshells. They may want to grow, to change, to try new things, but they carry a false belief, and it’s heavy. They expect things to go wrong, they expect to fail or be rejected or be awkward, and that’s usually what they get, which confirms their fear and fuels the cycle.
But what if we can change our expectations? Well we can of course. This is not about a false bravado or self delusion. This is not saying everything is perfect and no work needs to be done. It’s a simple act of defiance. We refuse to get drawn into the fear, the worry, the anxiety, the doubt. We may feel it, but it doesn’t control us.
Our outer circumstances may not be different yet but… We change our inner world. We chose to be positive, we expect things to work out. We expect people will support us on our journey, we expect to always bounce back, we expect to learn from every mistake or failing and adjust and adapt. We refuse to accept the fear and negative thoughts as the truth.
When that old familiar feeling of not being good enough resurfaces we can choose to reject that. This doesn’t mean not feeling the feeling, pushing it away. It doesn’t mean fighting yourself and trying to control each thought. It just simply means not agreeing with every thought. Observing them, But not clinging or fighting.
We get to choose what we accept or reject in the garden of our mind. So we must pull the weeds (negativity, etc) so they don’t multiply and spread. And we tend the good plants that nourish us (positivity etc). We cultivate our garden and we reap the things that we sow.
This doesn’t mean to be delusional. But we have a serious choice to make. Do we consciously let go every time the fear comes up? Trusting God, the universe, life, whatever you believe in. Or does the fear win? Does it control you? Does it make you feel like you’ve failed before you even started? That’s the negative expectations coming out.
We don’t need to be so afraid. Take a chance and allow yourself to have some hope. So regardless of how you ended up believing these false negative expectations, are you ready to let them go? Whats one way you can practice letting go of fear today?
