Disarming anger, taking back control.
Anger is like a bomb in some ways. It’s explosive and dangerous, pressurized and harmful. Its not inherently wrong to feel angry, its natural, but chronic anger…
Chronic anger underlies a deeper issue, and we don’t want to be explosive to those around us, our friends family and loved ones, even social peers or strangers.
So how do we work through that gut sensation that sometimes comes up? We need to install a pressure release valve. Pressure mounts, we need a way to regulate it.
Not only that but we also need a meter, a way to sense our own inner state. We need awareness of whats going on under the hood. We need to be conscious.
This is done through observation of one’s internal state, the thoughts we are having, the sensations and feelings within. Catching the rage rising internally.
We calibrate ourselves to be fine tuned, so we don’t unconsciously snap at others. We sense our mood change in real time. We discern if the anger is justified or not.
As for the valve, it may be different on an individual basis, for some its a physical activity, sweating it out or burning it off through weight lifting, sports, running.
For others the valve is a mental one, anger is released through letting go, meditation, writing, even artistic pursuits like music or other forms of art.
Know thyself, for some anger is released through prayer or some other spiritual practice, the point is we release the burden of carrying our own pent up rage.
We don’t selfishly lash out on others like a child who cannot control themselves, a child has the excuse of not knowing better, we do not. Anger is no right to abuse.
To be mature we must be self controlled, knowing when to get out for a run or withdraw temporarily to open the pressure release valve. No explosion needed.
We all make mistakes and of course sometimes the anger boils over, but this is not a justification for spewing toxic energy out on those around us or even online.
So instead of letting the rage build until the pressure reaches a breaking point, lets pause, lets breathe, lets reflect on our inner conditions, let’s accept and release.
Whats one healthy way you can release some pent up anger today?
