Breaking free from the past.

The past can cast a shadow over our minds.

When we find ourselves caught up in old cycles, old habits, old belief systems. It’s almost automatic. But wait… We don’t want to live that way anymore.

So how do we break these shackles of shame that we carry? How do we get rid of the old worries, the routines, the addictions?

Well it begins with presence. We pause, we notice. We notice the thoughts to give into the craving, we are aware of them before impulsively giving in.

We notice our patterns and our habits, we observe ourselves. We notice the old thoughts spinning around in our minds. At this stage we don’t need to change anything. We simply need to be present and observe.

Next we must remember that the past no longer exists. It did, but now it is a memory in the mind, just like the future is a concept in the mind.

We cannot physically go back and change anything from the past, we cannot presently go change the future, because the only moment is here and now. So to dwell on the past is pointless.

So how do we drop the weight of the past and move forward unburdened?

Let’s begin to rewire our brains from these old circuits they’ve been running on.

We don’t need to identify with that old version of ourselves, because that’s no longer who we are. The reason we keep repeating old behaviours is because we still have our old mindset, with outdated beliefs and we’re acting out our past habits.

We are literally carrying the past around with us, as an old program we run in our minds. The program that tells us “who we are”. The key is awareness. When we notice this we begin to change it.

So let’s work to be free. It may not be easy, but it is well worth it. We can start by simply observing. Notice when the old program takes over, notice when you slip back into that unconscious mode. Notice the old patterns and cycles.

Next we want to begin re-defining ourselves. We step into who we are becoming. We use the present moment to create a new identity for ourselves. We shape our future in the here and now, by consciously becoming someone new.

We take action each day to avoid the pitfalls of the old self. We learn from our mistakes and avoid things that we know drain us. We work to overcome old addictions and behaviours that weigh us down and hold us back.

Because we do not need to be bound to past ways of being. We are conscious, we can change at any time. We are not who we were in the past, so we can make the choice to stop playing out these old patterns. We change.

All we need to do, is to be here now. Aware of where we put our attention.
