Failing forward.
We all fail, but what if our failures could lead to success?
The good news is they can. We can fail forward. Here’s how…
The concept comes from the term falling forward. We all trip, we all stumble and we all fall. But when we fall we should fall forward closer to where we want to go. Rather than falling backwards further from our desired destination.
Practically speaking this means when we fail, we make the most of it. We learn from the mistakes and incorporate the lessons moving forward, never repeating the same mistake twice.
We don’t lose heart or get discouraged from a failure. We charge it to the game, knock the dust off, hold our head up and keep moving forward.
Every time an action doesn’t give us the desired results, we pause. We take a moment and reflect on what went wrong and how we can do better the next time.
We use the uncomfortable emotions associated with failure as fuel to keep moving and we understand where we went wrong in the past and how to avoid that snare moving forward.
The truth is we can avoid messing up from time to time. But we can avoid allowing those missteps to derail all of our progress. We can be calculated with the risks we take and stratigec with our moves. We avoid reckless behaviour and always think long term with our decisions.
Living this way, we can literally fail forward. The goal isn’t to avoid failing altogether but rather to avoid catastrophic failure. The little fails along the way are part of the journey, and they actually teach us how to be better.
