Every journey begins with a single step.

We don’t need to have it all planned out. Id go as far as to say we can never have our journey perfectly planned. Because life happens and things change.

Trying to have everything planned out inevitably leads to analysis paralysis. Planning is very useful and vital but over planning is a form of procrastination, a way of avoiding the hard work. It allows us to feel productive while avoiding failure. Put simply this is a coping mechanism.

We may feel like we’re just being safe or cautious, but in reality we’re avoiding something. Thinking can become a form of escapism to save us from the doing.

I know this firsthand, unfortunately i’ve spent a lot of time in this mode. Ive found it immensely helpful to get out of my own way. To stop allowing myself to endlessly educate and collect and hoard information, but instead just get some skin in the game. That’s the fastest way to learn after all.

Obviously we want to learn from the mistakes of others and avoid detrimental and foolish pitfalls, so there’s definitely some nuance and balance in this method. But ultimately nothing will change if we don’t make conscious effort towards our goals. Knowledge is only power if it’s applied. If we’re only learning without action, we’re engaging in a form of unproductive mental fantasy.

So lets take that first step, lets stop observing from the sidelines, but rather lets get into the game. There will be discomfort and likely failure along the way, but that’s the price we must pay, so let’s not delay, when we can start today.

So whats that thing you’ve been putting off? Are you ready to take that step?

Whats the one basic step you can take today to move closer to where you want to be?
