Fear is the enemy.
I don’t mean fear of heights or the hot stove. Im not speaking about things that are physically dangerous to the body. Im talking about those irrational fears that swirl around in our minds draining our energy bit by bit.
Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of public speaking or putting yourself out there. Fear of judgment of others or negative feedback or criticism.
This type of fear is one of the biggest impediments to peoples success.
It makes sense that we have these fears, we are tribal creatures after all.
Hundreds of years ago the fear of banishment from the group was a legitimate fear, it could lead to starvation, lack of protection and ultimately people loosing the ability to procreate by being outcasted from the tribe.
Now days these fears no longer hold the same weight or relevance. In fact they only hinder our progress.
It’s not normal to be on high alert all the time, constantly over analyzing, preparing for doom, and overthinking in general. But unfortunately it is being normalized and common.
Living in fear, anxiety and worry means we’re either anticipating a future scenario or fretting over something that happened in the past. This is not being present, and it is not helpful no matter how much we tell ourselves we’re “just being cautious or prepared”.
We can take steps each day to overcome these fears and live a more peaceful life with less anxiety, fear, stress and worry. This is called exposure therapy.
It’s a simple concept, we expose ourselves to things we’re afraid of in moderation. We face the fear and take a step towards it. We have courage, accept that we feel afraid but we act anyways. This serves to show us that we can overcome these fears and don’t need to let them dictate how we behave.
When we act despite the fear we usually teach ourselves the fear was mostly an illusion and we weren't in any real danger at the time we felt so afraid. This helps us immensely moving forward because we gain a new perspective.
We see that we’re tougher and more capable than we previously believed. We were falling short of our full potential because we were allowing fears to limit our beliefs and actions.
So whats one small thing today that you can confront? One way to say no to fear and yes to freedom? I say take that step today and don’t wait. There’s great possibilities and opportunities on the other side of that fear. Let’s find out what they are.
