Daily Drop

The beauty of early rising.

There’s something tranquil about an early morning.

For many of us early in the morning is one of the few times we can get some real quiet, and calm. The other members of the household may still be asleep. The traffic isn’t full steam ahead and noisy yet. Maybe the birds are chirping.

This is a great opportunity to start the day off right. For me my morning routine involves making coffee, doing my daily workout, and if I have time, getting work done on my computer or reading my books.

As i’ve developed this habit of waking up early, something shifted. I used to want to stay in bed and sleep longer. But now I actually enjoy getting up and at it. There’s a sense of creative energy in the morning that feels different.

As people who strive to grow there's another nice benefit to early rising. Productivity. By the time others in our timezones are waking up we can have a chunk of our daily work done and out of the way.

This can be the difference between us and others in our field. As entrepreneurs or driven/ambitious people this can be a key to having more success. Im not saying we should obsess on competition, our greatest competition should be with ourselves. But they do say, the early bird gets the worm.

When we rise early we’re able to get more done, in a less rushed way. And this isn’t just about work by the way. If waking up early to go for a walk or run is your thing great. That’s probably just as helpful to have the rest of your day be productive.

We can use the early morning to soak in the silence for a few minutes, to meditate if that’s for you, to stretch and loosen the internal tension. Maybe to do some art or creative thinking and brainstorming. We can use these few hours in the early morning for reflection on life and our goals and purpose.

If you’re a person of faith, some of this time can be spent in communion with the creator, in prayer or whatever practice you enjoy. The morning hours hold great potential to reshape our lives in healthy balanced and productive ways.

I find writing down goals in the morning to be especially invigorating and expansive. I like to reflect on my purpose and mission in this life. And how I can be of service to the best of my ability.

The one caveat is that we want to make sure we’re getting enough sleep. So let’s get to bed at a reasonable hour each night when possible. This way we wake up feeling refreshed, recharged and ready for the day.

My question to you is, how will you be spending your early mornings?
