Learning from pain.
Pain can be a teacher, it can guide us away from things we’re not supposed to do and places were not made to be in. Although let me be clear, Im not saying pain is always some spiritual lesson. Life has an element of randomness to consider.
What I am saying is, we can use pain in our lives, physical or emotional as an indicator of disharmony, for example depression is a form of psychological pain, it tells us somethings off, we can’t run from emotions for long, we must face them.
Some people repress their pain fully, but thats dangerous and unhealthy, it’s come to the surface to be looked at, we peer into our shadow and bring it into the light.
Another example is physical pain, as I write this I feel physical pain in my right arm from an injury I got over a year ago working an insane job. Ive been doing manual labour most of my adult life, while working this job my arm was injured, and painful as it is, even now to this day. It was a big lesson for me. Life changing.
It was a sign for me, I had been wanting to get out of manual labour and put my mind to work and build new skills, but at the same time, construction, tree planting and other physical type skills were all I knew, to earn a decent income.
This injury forced me to learn new skills, I probably wouldn’t be writing this today if I was still doing manual labour. Within these last months i’ve learned so much.
For someone who’s addicted to a substance, they must go through the pain of withdrawal to stop. Unfortunately for some it keeps them stuck using, too afraid to face that pain, but others allow that pain to teach them. They know the way out.
They see what they’ve been doing to themselves and how much addiction truly had a grip on them, they know what they must face… Get through the withdrawals and don’t ever look back. It’s physically and emotionally painful, but freeing.
The pain of losing a business deal, an athletic competition, the pain of failing at something in general, it can teach us so much if we only allow it to. When we acknowledge the presence of pain, we give ourselves the opportunity to grow.
Emotional pain like physical pain, is a signal that something probably needs to change, somewhere along the way the balance of life was thrown off and we can use the pain as a radar to try to see whats going on under the hood so to speak.
So let’s not hide from the pain or turn and cover our eyes and refuse to look, ignorance is not bliss, when understanding whats wrong can solve the problem. Pain is part of life and without it, this world would be a lot more dangerous, pain teaches us somethings off and needs to be noticed, acknowledged and fixed.
What’s been a metaphorical thorn in your side thats been uncomfortable for too long? Are you ready to take a look at it and see if it has anything to teach you?
