Daily Drop

Knowing when to let go… Why we should let go. And how.

When life begins to feel predictable, stale, joyless, soulless, like every day is the same, on repeat, life has become a pattern or cycle. It’s time to let go of something.

When we rely on an addictions for our joy, peace and pleasure, we are neglecting ourselves and those we love, numbing out, hiding, choosing illusions over reality.

Allow me to not be a hypocrite, Ive struggled with this exact battle myself with substance addiction for over 11 years and i’m currently 25. I am letting it go.

Letting go literally means dropping something, a belief system programmed into us by others, an unhealthy environment, compulsive urges, anger, hate, negativity.

We can let go. Addictions, bad memories, shame, anxiety, worry, attachments to material items. We don’t have to carry these anymore, its a daily choice to let go.

Often we fear the unknown so deeply that we’re more afraid to change than to stay the same. We know our familiar struggles, we get comfortable and complacent.

The irony is that often we are suffering and miserable, because we refuse to let go of something hurting us. Like carrying a hot coal in our hands because it glows.

We’re afraid of what would happen if we stop. Like the addict getting sober, we must go through the withdrawals, cravings and discomfort. There’s no shortcut.

But often like addicts we put off the dreaded day of letting go. We hold onto the anger because we think having a chip on the shoulder is serving us somehow.

We hold onto the old habits, ways of thinking and beliefs because it’s easier to cling to an idea than to examine it in the light of day and see we could be wrong.

There’s times in every persons life, when we decide to let go, we must, we can’t go on living the same way, it’s too painful. Something needs to change or else…

There’s a tipping point. “Rock Bottom”. The pain of holding on outweighs the fear of dropping it and facing the unexpected. But we don’t need to go that far down.

Deep down, in our souls, we all know things we can drop, deadweight we can stop carrying, habits that are no longer serving us. Belief systems that keep us stuck.

These are just examples, you know what you’re holding onto, I wont try to tell you. Im just illustrating the picture. We know the things that are poisonous for growth.

The only thing stopping us from letting go is fear. The only thing to fear is the fear itself. The unknown is where we go to grow, because we don’t know enough yet.

We have to be willing to test our own ideas, to be wrong, to explore what we don’t understand, otherwise we stay the same, trapped frozen in place. Turned to stone.

So let’s renew our minds, let’s be open to change, seeing new possibilities for life. Having eyes open for opportunities, ways to grow, ways to heal. Taking real action.

Let’s not be afraid to drop the unhealthy attachment or addiction, because when we let go of something, we make room for something new, something better.

In order to get better we need to be willing to be honest to ourselves and others and be accountable to change, we need to be aware of whats causing trouble for us.

Once we are conscious of what we need to fix, it becomes much more simple to find the solution. But often we choose to be ignorant so we don’t need to change.

We know we need to fix something but we ignore it until it can’t be ignored any longer. By that point what was once a small thing becomes more deeply rooted.

So let’s be proactive, let’s choose freedom, not bondage. We have sovereignty, if there’s a habit, addiction or way of living that no longer serves you, time to drop it.

So whats one thing holding you back that you can work on letting go of today?
