Sacrifice is a practice that can take us to our next level.
We sacrifice the artificial pleasures of today (Distractions, junk food, gambling, adult media, drugs and alcohol etc) for a better tomorrow.
We have the choice to sacrifice our goals for fleeting pleasures or to sacrifice the “comfort zone” for our goals.
We only have so much time and energy each day and the way we decide to spend it will shape our lives. Choosing hedonism over discipline may not immediately show effects in our lives but inevitably it will catch up.
Each time we choose to let go of negative destructive habits, we choose to look out for our future selves. We practice self love and we become a little better.
We shouldn’t only make sacrifices for our own gain. The more we can grow as people and learn and prosper the more we can help those we care about and everyone we come in contact with.
Our presence is felt when we show up because we’re not weighed down and exhausted and burdened from the shame and guilt of choosing pleasure over purpose. We feel lighter, more energetic, more creative and productive.
Anything that you feel is holding you back probably is. The thing is we have the choice, do we listen to the warnings in our conscience, the thoughts “I need to change, Im better than this”. Do we ignore the small cry of our conscience and carry on full steam ahed on the wrong path?
Ultimately it’s your decision, i’m simply offering the consideration that if we choose to make a sacrifice today for our future selves, tomorrow we can begin an upward spiral. Unfortunately the trend today for many is quite the opposite, sacrificing goals or morals even for pleasure has become quite common.
Maybe this is a symptom of a larger wide scale problem in our society where people are unsatisfied by their lives and choose to cope through these behaviours that provide instant gratification and a relief from the mundane daily cycle that feels meaningless to them. But that’s a topic for another day.
In summary, When we sacrifice instant gratification for long term gratification the results are almost always more favourable. Things that last take time and dedication. But how can we have the ability to stick it out for the long haul if we’re constantly being pulled from one distraction to the next?
Before a tree can grow tall and mighty above ground, it needs roots underground to feed it and keep it in place. When a house is being built before it can be completed and beautiful it first needs a firm foundation.
So my question to you is what do you want to build on? the bedrock of discipline, patience, consistency and long term goals, Or the shifting sand of dopamine seeking, temporary highs, escapes from reality and instant gratification?
