Daily Drop

Working through intense emotions.

If you’re anything like me you also struggle with intense emotions from time to time. Emotions can seem to be a powerful force to motivate and spur us onwards.

There’s a real hidden problem with this. Emotions have peaks and valleys, they’re constantly shifting and changing, rising up and crashing down. How can we expect to stay consistent when we’re constantly being pulled in different directions?

A helpful strategy for me to not allow emotions to control my behaviour has been to focus my awareness on the present moment. This can be done through breath work and other mindfulness techniques.

When we’re living in the here and now we’re less likely to fall victim to fear of the future or regret from the past. The more we learn to be present, the greater the presence we will have in the world.

I know how hard it is to be constantly battling the mind. Its exhausting. Its a daily battle to chose to remain in the seat of the observer. But when we learn to observe our emotions and thoughts, we can make more room for internal peace.

It’s a daily practice not an overnight event. So I encourage you to give this a try, next time difficult emotions come up, breathe. Feel the emotions, don’t fight them or push them away by suppressing them, but rather allow them to be there.

Let them pass. Observe them, but don’t identify with them. You are not your thoughts, your emotions or your feelings. You are the one who’s aware of experiencing them. Once we can detach from the impulse to react to every negative mood, we will begin to feel something rise up internally… Calm.
