Daily Drop

Letting go to grow.

Sometimes in life, we must let go to grow. This can mean different things but we all understand the concept. We’ve all clung onto something that was no longer good for us, until the point where it caused pain, and we had to release the grip.

Today i’m speaking specifically about things that we grasp for, that no longer serve us. We usually know what they are. It can be a bad habit you’ve had forever, it can be the wrong crowd or an unhealthy relationship, a food tendency that doesn’t feel good or maybe an addiction that frequently causes a great deal of sadness/shame.

We know the behaviour, belief, pattern, cycle, etc, is not helpful. We know it’s harmful, but we still feel pain letting it go, it can even feel impossible at times. We are programmed to behave in predictable ways and we develop routines and patters that keep things running smoothly. When we change it’s uncomfortable.

We choose the familiar comfort zone over the unknown adventure. The problem with living that way is it keeps you in a bubble. It keeps life small, and predictable, mundane and ordinary. How do you know your limits and potential capabilities if you never test them? We need to be willing to come forward into new challenges.

Those old addictions can be broken, it doesn’t matter how deep rooted they may be, we have the ability to behave differently. We are not slaves of our own worst whims and desires unless we choose to be. We have the opportunity to create a new outlook on life, new goals. We choose whats meaningful and worthwhile to pursue for us. We can change anything within our power to do so, we’re not stuck.

So let’s make the changes we know deep down we need to make. Those tough decisions we’ve been putting off. Those uncomfortable moments we’ve been avoiding facing, it’s time. Because the only time is now, the longer we wait to do what we know we need, the longer we put off the life we want to be living. Nothing changes if nothing changes, it’s time to stop being so afraid to take action.

Because the life we want is on the other side of the changes we need to make. We’ve been feeling the call for a long time now, but we’ve been scared to make the choice, to commit, to take the jump, the leap of faith… But we’ve waited long enough, the time is now. No more waiting, time is of the essence and we aren’t getting any younger. So let’s not be afraid to make the changes we know we must.

It’s scary now, at the threshold, the border between who you were and who you’re becoming, but don’t worry. It’s worth it. If you weren’t meant to develop into someone new, you wouldn’t be getting the signals that it’s time. But you can feel it can’t you? The pull forward to step into something new, to be different than before, to shed the past failed attempts at progress and evolve. To start a new path.

Every major change starts small, one moment, one choice, one small step of faith. But these small decision's can be the catalyst for major life upgrades. One day we will look back on our past ways of being and feel a great sense of relief that we’ve developed beyond those old ways of coping with life. We will no longer identify with who we were, those hard years will just be a distant memory of another time.

We don’t need to be afraid to change, we know what we need to do deep down. We know we’re ready, and we have been ready for too long, always just putting it off for another day. But enough is enough. No more living in fear, no more allowing ourselves to numb out and avoid life. It’s time to get a grip, and take back control of our lives, so we can become our full potential and live our lives to the fullest.

What do you know you need to let go of in your own life? And why have you been clinging for so long? What do you think it gives you? Can you find a healthy alternative to replace the perceived benefit of the unhealthy attachment?
